Five Ten Impact Pro Shoes

Five Ten’s Impact Pro Shoes were realised last year to supersede the Impact VXi’s. I’ve been riding them since December so how have they performed?

The first thing you notice taking these out of the box is the weight and solidity of them. These shoes are designed for gravity specific use and it’s instantly evident. My UK size 7.5 (US 8.5, Eur 41.5, CM 265, US W 10) weighed in at 496g per shoe.

Reading the 5 10 information, the Impact Pros offer ‘a synthetic light weight weather resistant upper’ with ‘an impact-resistant four-layer toe box with 3mm of Poron impact resistant foam’ which coupled ‘with a removable Ortholite moulded sock liner and compression moulded PU midsole’ offer ‘added durability and a consistent pedal feel’.

The reality of these shoes is they are everything they claim to be though, as I’ve got past riding in the sub zero temperatures of winter, an issue has started to emerge……my feet have started to get noticeably hot in them. The waterproofing and protection on offer from these shoes is fantastic but it doesn’t allow for a lot of ventilation and, if you’re paying out for these, this needs to be considered.

The full dotty, Stealth S1, outsole continues to provide impressive grip on but now also off the bike. This has been achieved by the addition of smaller dots at the front as well as half dots around the edge and other shapes which are specifically aimed at increasing the grip available when pushing back up the hill.

As well as waterproofing, another thing they’ve tried to improve on with these shoes is drying time and, for me, they’ve achieved it. These shoes are a lot less absorbent than previous Impacts and other shoes on the market and do dry quick meaning they’re nicely ready for next day riding (or outdoor wearing as they’re that resilient).

Overall, the Impact Pros are squarely aimed at gravity riding and, make no mistake, are a sturdy pair of shoes but, for me, this sturdiness is confidence inspiring.

Ventilation is an issue & I find my feet getting unreasonably hot riding in spring conditions but I can forgive that for the level of contact and protection on offer.

There has been a lot of development work put in to these and there are noticeable improvements in all of the areas they’ve identified.

Verdict:

(With one or two reservations/considerations) Unsurpassed.

What the do others say?

Chain Reaction Cycles = 4.4/5 over 27 reviews

Adidas (potentially a bit biased I know but……) = 4.1/5 over 16 reviews
