The downhill mountain biking community is bowing its head in respect today as details of Canadian downhill rider Stevie Smith’s passing have emerged. Devinci Global Racing confirmed Stevie had passed away following an enduro motorcycle accident in his hometown of Nanimo, British Columbia.
Gabe Fox (Devinci Global Racing Team Manager) paid tribute saying
“Today we lost a great person, who taught me about myself and influenced many. Stevie was a fierce competitor, an honest friend and a rider who made me proud on countless occasions. I am honoured to consider him my friend for so long.”
Stevie took the overall world cup downhill title in 2013 before a series of injury plagued seasons had meant we hadn’t seen him fulfilling his considerable potential. This season, however, it looked like we may be seeing the 26 year old at his slope slaying best as he recorded a second place in the opening race at Lourdes.
A Celebration of Life is being held at Vancouver Island Convention Centre in Nanaimo, B.C on 21/May/2106 at 1 p.m and the “Stevie Smith Legacy Fund” has been set up at www.gofundme.com/23k7fus.
Sad day – RIP Stevie Smith
